Application Profile
An application profile is a model derived from an existing technical specification to best fit community needs.
The best way to maintain interoperability with an application profile is to be sure that this application profile is restrictive regarding the base specifications.
More information and guidelines on application profiling can be found at:
- IMS Website
- CEN/ISSS WS/LT
EIfEL Applications Profiles include:
- CDM-FR FOAD
- HR-XML Europass CV AP
- Europortfolio IMS ePortfolio Content Package (CP) AP
- IMS eP Europass CV AP
- IMS LIP Europass Diploma Supplement for French community AP
EIfEL expertise in this field:
- Participation in the European Project Telcert
- Expert for the CEN/ISSS WS/LT and contributor on CEN/ISSS CWA about application profiling
- Leader of the HR-XML Europass CV WG.

eLearning (e-learning)
eLearning: the eTransformation of all the processes linked to individual, community, organisational and territorial development, to respond to the need of a learning society and exploiting the potential of knowledge, information and learning technologies (KILT).
eLearning is more than mere technology enhanced (or supported) learning as it is essentially an organic transformation process, supported by technologies, and affecting:
- learning individuals
- learning communities
- learning organisations
- learning cities and regions
This transformation process should be led by eStrategies for learning, rather than eLearning strategies that tend to consider eLearning as a separate field like distance learning or online learning.
eStrategies for learning should also take into account that learning is embedded in our everyday's life and can take many different forms:
- formal, non-formal and informal
- individual, community-based and social
- face to face or at a distance
- open and flexible
- ...
ePortfolio (digital portfolio, e-portfolio)
An ePortfolio is a digital collection of authentic and diverse evidence, drawn from a larger archive representing what a person, a community or organization has learned over time and on which the person, community or organisation has reflected, and designed for presentation to one or more audiences for a particular rhetorical purpose” (adapted from NLII, 2003).
It is a combination of:
- Archives – heterogeneous, distributed, e.g. learning outcomes, reflections, testimonies.
- Views – multiple presentations, according to the objective and the reader, e.g. achievement, assessment, job finding.
- Services – transactions and processes, e.g. cross-referencing evidence with competency standards, profile matching, getting feedback from peers, sharing knowledge across communities
In usual language, an ePortfolio generally refers to a specific "view." An ePortfolio management platform supports the learner in organising the archive, providing the connection to the services, the publication of views and the management of rights.

Europass
Europass is an initiative from the European Commission supported by the Cedefop to increase transparency and transparency of qualifications and competencies across Europe.
It consists of 5 different parts:
- Europass CV
- Europass Language Portfolio
- Europass Diploma Supplement
- Europass Certificate Supplement
- Europass Mobility.
The two first documents can be field by the learner/owner himself. The three others should be provided by national bodies.
More information on Europass can be found on the Cedefop dedicated website here:
http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/
EIfEL is working on several Application profiles to modelize these models with existing specifications (IMS, HR-XML).
Interoperability (data portability)
Interoperability from the individual point of view has for objective to insure that every individual has full control over a set of data and processes designed to support further learning, employability and social inclusion. It is about empowering learners as consious managers of their assets.
Interoperability from the organisational point of view has for objective to maximise the exploitation of individual assets within business processes (including learning and assessment processes) while preserving privacy and IPR (individual and organisational).
Plugfest (livefest, fesival, connectathon)
A plugfest is a live session with technical solution providers to test interoperability of data in real life between several systems.
EIfEL is organising plugfests in the field of ePortfolio, eLearning, eHR and digital identity interoperability in coordination with international events (ePortfolio conferences, iLearningForum...).
