ferent population mix to when it was founded just over 50 years ago. One of the main change agents is seen to be learning and to this end NHSU has been created as the corporate university for all health and social care staff. NHSU\rquote

dually-tailored professional development programmes through the new NHS University (NHSU). The NHSU will start work in 2003.  It will begin by delivering common induction and communication skills for all NHS staff.  There will be innovative common learnin
g programmes across professions both pre and post registration.  Lifelong learning for the whole workforce will support staff to extend their skills and knowledge and take on new roles and responsibilities\'85\rdblquote

lth and social care workers to be able to record and reflect on their learning achievements, be they formal or informal,  and  to plan their future self-development. Such a system will also allow health and social care employers to know the skills of the 
staff they employ and allow for more effective workforce planning, but always under the control of the individual learner.

\par NHSU is currently planning a significant pilot for 2005 to help evaluate the benefits of ePortfolios in health and social care and to assist in the planning for a full service for all staff to begin rolling out in 2006.
